Description
Doxycyclinum (ut hyclas) 100 mg; Excip. pro compr. 
Common uses
Respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections due to susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and other organisms; Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia; chronic bronchitis, sinusitis); genito-urinary tract infections (including cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, klebsiella-enterobacter, staphylococcus species, Chlamydia trachomatis); soft tissue infections (including infected traumatic and postoperative wounds, furunculosis, impetigo, cellulitis, abscess and paronychia, caused by susceptible strains of klebsiella-enterobacter group, Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus species, Escherichia coli and Staphylcoccus albus). Also, gastrointestinal infections (caused by susceptible strains of, for example, shigella species, salmonella species, Entamoeba hystolytica, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli ), ophthalmic infections (caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci, gonococci, Haemophilus influenzae ). Trigonitis and prostatis caused by proteus species, psittacosis, certain other infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteroides species, listeria species, rickettsia species, yersinia species, brucella species (in combination with streptomycin), Bordetella pertussis, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, spirochaetes (treponema species), Bacillus anthracis, Neiserria meningitis and Clostridium welchii. May also be useful as an adjunct to amoebicides in acute intestinal amoebiasis. 
Contraindications
Pregnancy and lactation. Known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. Special Precautions : Hepatic impairment. Porphyria. Should only be administered to children under 12 years of age if considered essential. Interactions: Milk, antacids, mineral supplements, oral contraceptives, oral anticoagulants, barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin. Adverse Drug Reactions : Gastrointestinal disturbances, allergic reactions, superinfections. Photosensitivity reported. 
Dosage
Adult Dose : 200mg stat, then 100mg daily. Severe infections, 200mg daily. Note: Capsules should be taken in the sitting or standing position with plenty of water. Child dose : Children weighing less than 50kg, 4mg/kg bodyweight on first day, followed by 2mg/kg on subsequent days. For severe infections up to 4mg/kg per day may be used. Children weighing over 50kg, use adult dose.
